Making Time for Others this Season

Kelley Kelly and Liisa Hyvarinen Temple wrapping gifts to raise money for the MacDill Enlisted Spouses Club.

The holidays are a busy time and even more so for parents. That’s why I wanted to note that several members of the MacDill Enlisted Spouses Club gave up their time last weekend to raise money at a gift wrapping event outside the base exchange at Macdill Air Force Base.

The club uses the money to help children whose parents are deploying. They give the children certificates for Daddy Dolls, which are dolls made from the photo image of the child’s deploying parent.

The club donated 300 certificates last year to children whose parents deployed according to Angie Smith, club secretary.

Somebody is getting a Santa teddy bear for Christmas.

Angie is the mother of five children, yet she spent her Saturday, just two weeks before Christmas, wrapping presents and taping on bows to help the children of other military families. Another mom, Kelley Kelly, took time away from her three boys to assist that morning as did club member Liisa Hyvarinen Temple.

I did not stay the entire day, so I don’t have the names of the afternoon volunteers. But, I thought it worth noting at this time of year when there are so many demands on our time, attention and money that some people are giving back to their community.
