Underwater Training and Races for Wounded Warriors

International shark expert Dr. Eugenie Clark told me SCUBA diving at age 87 made her feel young because it restored her freedom of movement. That’s a sensation some wounded warriors are getting a chance to experience this weekend at Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida.

As part of the Formula H2O underwater racing league‘s final race of the season, specialized training and competitive events are planned specifically for veterans injured while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Weeki Wachee Warrior Challenge is this weekend at the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park of Florida.

The International Association of Handicapped Divers is hosting the training and rehabilitation sessions using underwater scooters. Friday is set aside for the underwater therapy and training of wounded warriors. The races are scheduled Friday and Sunday.

Injured veterans from the following organizations are expected to participate:

Weeki Wachee is known for its underwater mermaid shows. All underwater activities can be viewed from the state park’s underwater theater.
