The wife of Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales told the Today Show over the weekend that she doesn’t believe her husband is capable of killing the 17 Afghan civilians especially the children.

Karilyn Bales told NBC’s “Today” show, “He loves children, he’s like a big kid himself,” she said. “I have no idea what happened, but he would not … he loves children, and he would not do that.”

Bales was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, and is being held at a U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Investigators now think that Bales allegedly returned to his base in-between the killings in two different villages.

“I don’t think anything will really change my mind in believing that he did not do this. This is not what it appears to be,” she said.
